  • Lunar phenomena presented here are the phases and general orbital positions. The phases are already understood by most people.

The nodes are when the moon crosses Earth's equator. Ascending node is the northward crossing; the descending node is the southward crossing. These compare to the sun's vernal and autumnal equinoxes, respectively.

A lunistice is like a solstice, except it involves the moon instead of the sun. The northern lunistice is when the moon is farthest north in its orbit. Likewise, the southern lunistice is when the moon is farthest south. If you're in the same hemisphere over which lunistice is happening, the moon will be very high in the sky. And contrariwise, if lunistice is happening over the other hemisphere, the moon will be rather low.

Apogee is the point in the moon's orbit when it's farthest from Earth. Perigee is the point when it's closest. Casual observers don't notice the difference. But those who are very astute may see that the moon takes up a little less room in a telescope view when it's farther away.
